When the owners of this southwest Portland home began thinking about updating their kitchen, the project scope grew from just constructing a new island, to a complete renovation. With the help of designer Robin Rigby Fisher, CMKBD/CAPS, they created a space that is comfortable, yet functional and ideal for entertaining.
To open up the space, a pass-through window was cut into the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, and a bar was created in the space that doubles as a stand-in buffet. Horizontal grain Sapele Mahogany cabinetry anchors the kitchen, and the glass tile backsplash in shades of cream, grey, and blue continue the horizontal aesthetic. PentalQuartz countertops in Sparkling White provide both balance with a lighter hue and ease of maintenance.
A large island in the center of the kitchen provides space for multiple cooks, and houses a warming drawer as well as a wine fridge. At one end of the island a raised glass bar and seating area is the perfect place for guests to hang out. Stainless steel appliances complete the contemporary look, while LED lighting improves energy efficiency.
